Children’s dental care is different from adult dentistry in many ways. Baby teeth set the stage for permanent teeth; early habits influence future dental health; and kids’ minds and emotions require a gentler approach. By investing in early preventive care, you reduce the risk of decay, misalignment, and dental anxiety down the road.

Research shows that untreated decay in children can affect their speech, eating, school attendance, and overall well-being. That’s why we emphasise preventive practices — cleanings, fluoride, sealants, dietary counselling, long before an issue becomes serious.

Bringing a child to the dentist for the first time can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. At Aspire One Dental:

We often begin seeing kids as early as one year of age or within six months of the first tooth erupting, depending on readiness.

The first visit is more about familiarisation than treatments. We focus on building trust: letting the child explore, pushing buttons, trying on gloves, squirting air/water instruments in demonstration.

We explain procedures using gentle, nonfrightening language, no “needle,” “drill,” or “pull.”

If your child is ready, we may perform a cleaning and a simple examination, but there’s no pressure to do more than what feels comfortable.

We teach parents and children homecare techniques (brushing, flossing), basic nutrition advice, and guidance on pacifier use, thumb-sucking, and more.

Our goal: the first visit should be fun, gentle, and confidence-building.

To keep little smiles healthy, regular preventive care is essential. Here are the core components and how we manage them at Aspire One:

Routine Check-ups & Cleanings (every 6 months)
These visits allow us to monitor growth, detect early signs of decay, clean away plaque, polish teeth, and polish properly.

Fluoride Treatments & Remineralisation
Fluoride strengthens enamel, making it more resistant to decay — especially important for young and newly erupted teeth.

Fissure Sealants
For molars with deep pits and grooves, we may recommend sealants to “seal off” vulnerable surfaces from decay-causing bacteria.

Dietary & Oral Hygiene Education
We counsel families on limiting sugary or acidic snacks, encouraging water, and proper brushing/flossing habits.

Interceptive Orthodontic Monitoring
As your child grows, we monitor jaw development and spacing so that if early intervention is needed (e.g., guiding growth, managing crowding), we can act proactively.

Habit Management
Thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use or tongue thrusting can alter dental development. We help with strategies and guidance to manage or stop such habits.

We do so with care and will discuss space maintenance if needed.

Orthodontic Assessments
Around ages 7–9, we often perform early orthodontic evaluations to detect growth or alignment concerns — and coordinate referrals or conservative interceptive treatments if needed.

Mouthguards & Sports Protection
We help young athletes with custom mouthguards to protect against sports-related dental injuries.

Dental Check up and cleanings to resume.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) and state government have advised non-
urgent dental treatment can resume from the 28th of September under ADA Level 1
restrictions. We are now able to schedule all dental treatments for healthy patients
from the 28th of September onwards.

If we have cancelled your treatment due to COVID-19 restrictions we will be in
contact to reschedule your appointment in the coming weeks.

What does this mean?
Level 1 restrictions permit all dental treatments using standard precautions for people
who do not meet epidemiological or clinical risk factors for COVID-19 infection
transmission. Non-urgent treatment for people who do meet epidemiological or clinical
symptom criteria for COVID-19 risk should be deferred.

Patients will be asked to use an antibacterial mouth rinse prior to starting a procedure.
Social distancing measures have been set up in the waiting room as well as the
staggering of appointments. We ask that all patients sanitise their hands with the
alcohol-based handrub provided when they present at reception. We are also taking
temperatures on arrival and screening patients for possible symptoms and close contact
with COVID-19 cases.

We want to ensure the safety of all our patients and staff with appropriate pre-
screening for all patients. This includes whether the patient has:

been overseas recently

had contact with a known/suspected COVID-19 case in the last two weeks

resided in or visited a known high-risk area with a cluster of cases

recently tested for COVID-19

And demonstrated any of the following symptoms:

fever

a cough

sore throat

shortness of breath

fatigue

other respiratory symptoms

recent loss of smell/taste

If you are unsure of your situation, please contact our wonderful team:
Phone: (03) 9347 3003

Email: info@aspireonedental.com.au

Online Booking: https://aspireonedental.com.au/booking/

*Opening Hours:
– 9am-5pm Monday to Thursday.
– 9am-1pm on Fridays

*Please feel free to call and leave a voice message or send an email to the above
address. We will endeavor to respond ASAP.

We appreciate your understanding with the changes thus far. We are aware this
situation continues to evolve and we will update you of any further changes to our
operations.

We look forward to seeing you and hope you remain safe and healthy during this
uncertain time.

Victorian Dental Restrictions Update

The Australian Dental Association has recommended we move to level 3 dental restrictions as of the 7th of August. This means we will be deferring all non urgent treatment such as regular check-ups and cleans until restrictions are lifted. Dr Peter and Dr Richard therefore will be seeing patients for urgent treatment only and we will be opening only 2-3 days per week.

What does this mean for you?

If you are in pain and require treatment please do not hesitate to call us on 9347 3003. We are available for all emergencies and are committed to ensuring our patients receive urgent attention. We are also able to continue treatment for patients undergoing root canal treatment, urgent fillings and crown work. If you have an appointment booked and are unsure if treatment will be possible, please call 9347 3003 to discuss with our friendly team.

If you have a routine check-up and clean booked for the next couple of weeks we will be in touch to postpone these appointments to a later date.

Reduced Opening Hours

As we will be opening for emergencies only, our opening hours over the coming weeks will be variable. We will be opening 2-3 days depending on demand. If you call the practice please leave a detailed message with your name and number. We will be monitoring calls remotely and will call you back as soon as possible. Alternatively you may email info@aspireonedental.com.au which will also be checked regularly.

Stopping The Spread

Aspire One Dental continues to work closely with the governing bodies and has sourced the required personal protective equipment needed to protect our team. As we prioritise the health and safety of our team and patients, we have gone above and beyond the required measures by ensuring the provision of surgical hair covers, face shields and high-grade surgical masks should they be required during your visit.

We are required to use a rubber dam for all fillings, endodontic work and crown work to limit aerosol contamination. You’ll also notice a heightened use of protective wear from our staff and protocols such as social distancing and the installation of sneeze guards at reception. Patients will also be received one at a time in the waiting room to allow a thorough clean of all touch points with hospital grade disinfectant. We ask that patients do not remove masks until seated in the dental chair.

As always we follow the highest standard of infection control measures using hospital grade sterilisation and disinfection to protect you and our team. We have also introduced extra measures to reduce the possibility of viral transmission including pre-treatment screening, provision of hand sanitiser, and a move to accepting cashless transactions only.

We hope this post finds you safe and well, and we hope to see you again soon when restrictions are lifted.

Best wishes,

Dr Peter Nguyen and the Aspire One Dental Team.

Here at Aspire One Dental, we strive to educate the wider community on the importance of their teeth. We believe teaching children healthy habits is key for maintaining good oral hygiene later in life and so on the 3rd of July our team visited Fawkner Park Children’s Centre and Kindergarten.

With the help of Colgate’s mighty Tooth defenders, Dr Peter and Anna gave a fun, interactive presentation focused on demonstrating the best way to brush, which foods are good and which are bad for teeth and why visits to the dentist are important. The kids were set a ‘Tooth Defender Brushing Challenge’ which challenged them to brush for 2 minutes twice daily to attain tooth defender status!

With early education and awareness, children are equipped for a great start for a lifetime of good oral health.

The post Fawkner Park Children’s Centre Kindergarten Dental Talk first appeared on Aspire One Dental.

What we eat plays a huge, and often overlooked, part in maintaining healthy teeth.

One of the most effective dietary changes we can make for our dental health and overall wellbeing is to limit our intake of added sugars.

Unfortunately consuming too many of your favourite sweet treats can cause cavities! Sugar from the foods we eat is fermented by bacteria in the mouth. This fermentation produces acid which lowers the pH of the mouth and increases the risk of caries.

To minimize this process, the World Health Organisation recommends limiting our sugar intake to 6 teaspoons a day. To put that in perspective, a 350mL can of coke contains 9 teaspoons, a scary 1 ½ times our recommended daily intake.

Foods that are sweet, sticky and acidic are particularly worth limiting with soft drinks, cordials, lollies and sweetened spreads like honey and jam being especially guilty culprits.

It’s not all bad news! There are plenty of delicious foods that help to keep your teeth healthy.

Cheese and yoghurt are great for teeth! Dairy products contain calcium and vitamin D which are essential for healthy, strong teeth. Cheese and yoghurt are particularly great because they contain probiotics which help maintain the balance of good bacteria in our mouths.

In general, enjoying a wide variety of nutrient rich foods from the five food groups; whole grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy/dairy alternatives and meat/meat alternatives, is great for the body and consequently great for your teeth.

Combining these dietary considerations with regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups is the most effective way to prevent cavities and maintain your beautiful smile!

Today, Dr Peter explains why it’s important to schedule a dental checkup every six months.

Question : Is six monthly checkups really necessary?

Six monthly checkups allow dentists to detect issues early on, which usually means less treatment.

Delaying your visit until you have a toothache is more painful and costly. From my experience, toothaches seem to occur at the worst times (ie. before a holiday, school exams, a special occasion, on the weekend).

Quesion : How can I improve my smile. What are my options?

There are many options available, depending on what exactly you’d like to improve.

Options include

orthodontics,

crowns, veneers, implants

teeth whitening

Question : How to choose the right dentist for my family and friends?

Your dentist should listen to you and your concerns. The dentist should be a person you can trust and feel comfortable going too.

Here at Aspire One Dental, we pride ourselves in treating our patients like family and this is the main reason we offer and practice complete health dentistry.

My goal is to treat every patient as if they were my mum, dad, or sibling. -Dr Peter Nguyen

What is “complete health dentistry“?

The mouth is the gateway to the body. One aspect of complete health dentistry is educating our patients on this systemic link between the mouth and the body. We want our patients to understand that gum diseases raises their risk of contracting other inflammatory diseases such as:

Cardiovascular Disease

Diabetes

Stroke

Pancreatic Cancer

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Bleeding gums is a sign of inflammation. The majority of patients, have chronic inflammation that they might have overlooked because it does not affect them in the short term, but it can raise significant issues in the long term as studies have shown.

Therefore, We don’t just clean your teeth and fill your cavities; we help you to achieve complete health and wellness in every aspect of your dental care by educating and providing awareness.

Educating

We will educate each of our patients about proper oral hygiene and homecare. We know each patient wants to take good care of your teeth and of their health, but you may not know how. We give you the knowledge, tips and tricks you need for complete oral health.

The mantra of not just providing dental treatments but also educating you on the oral health and maintenance is what we call Complete Health Dentistry.

We welcome patients from Kew and neighbouring suburbs, including Deepdene, East Melbourne, Fairfield, Fitzroy, Hawthorn, Ivanhoe, and more.
